  SELECTIONS OF MY ART WORK       

The Art Department, when I was a teenager at school, had an annual exhibition; Brian Stott, who later played cricket for Yorkshire, commented that it was virtually my exhibition – I had so many works on show.

My paintings need some comments.

My Auntie did one art homework for me, and was given 10 out of 10; but this did show me what could be achieved.

The media used include watercolour, oil, acrylic, pen and ink, mixed, etching, and lithography. Using Google Maps, you may like to see what the location looks like now, and perhaps how careful I was in my painting.

The first a small oil of my Dad (who was an extremely good cricketer ... and Dad. In Italy, as the front-line moved northwards, a group of England and County players arranged a match, inviting him to play; he scored 111 - sending me the scorecard.  Sadly, his friend Hedley Verity was killed in the battle for Monte Casino.) Lithograph of Barabbas was shown at The Young Contemporaries, in London; and illustrates a poem by my friend John Isherwood: Barabbas (Son of a Father) is enjoying release, but sees Jesus going to die on the cross, which should have been his; as we see Jesus dying in our place.  £300 #5

An abstract of the Gospel Message, a diagram I have drawn more simply for several thousand people, to show: how our lives begin (the red line), but must continue forever - in either Heaven, or Hell.  The dark is to indicate that we are all sinful - guilty, and cannot enter the narrow gate of Heaven, which requires perfection, on Judgement Day.  However, there are the Cross, and the Resurrection to offer hope - we can accept God's loving mercy by repenting of our sinfulness (admitting our failing, and accepting God's help to become a new creation)  If you like, praying to the Lord Jesus the Messiah to save us: "Lord Jesus, please save me!"   Heaven satisfies God, and will certainly be glorious for us.  £500

A funeral passing through a cornfield in which the first sheaf has been harvested – signifying the resurrection of Christ, which is the beginning of the harvest for the Resurrection of Christians. The body is being taken to the Church burial ground – at the far end of the harvest field.   A black and white reproduction - from which this is taken - hung in the Rectory study of Vincent Van Gogh's father, and was a considerable influence.   £200 #90

Portraiture – some thoughts on the subject

Holbein usually painted from an angle between profile and full face.

A good portrait has something of a caricature about it.

Decide on the general shape of the head

 #D

   Draw a very faint line half way between the top of the head, and the chin, for the placing of the eyes

• Half way below for the shadow at the base of the nose

   

   Half way again for the centre-line of the mouth

  

   

  Start to draw the features

  Slight variations in these proportions give faces their character

  Ears come behind the cheekbones – the tops level with the eyes

  Observe and draw the eyes – almond shaped, with the space between, about the width of the eye

  Look carefully and draw the details

  

  The eyebrows give much of the character.

  The nose from the front has only the nostrils showing lines - the rest is degrees of shading

  Be prepared to draw every strand of hair.

   

  

  In a class, I reckoned I could always recognize the scholar: because we all draw rather like the face we show most interest in.

  Clothing gives time for relaxing work, and the background may be used to show associations with the life of the sitter.       

   

My portraits were made using photographs - open air, diffused light (to avoid sharp shadows), telephoto lens (to avoid the distortion of closeness)
